Textured
wall finishes can be created in numerous ways. The process for creating
a textured wall finish will depend on the final effect that you desire
to have in your room.
One type of textured wall
finish that is easily to accomplish and that results in a wonderful
textured finish effect utilizes tissue paper, household glue and paint.
Other materials can also be used in lieu of tissue paper, such as brown
packing paper, newsprint, or other types of paper that remains intact
when wet.
Make sure that the wall is clean and free
of debris before you begin your textured finish project. Then take a
clean paintbrush and lightly coat the wall with household glue. It is
advisable to complete this textured finish project in sections so that
the glue does not dry before you can work with the section. You should
prepare torn sections of the paper prior to beginning the project. Tear
the strips in sizes that you can work with easily. Take a piece of
tissue or other paper and crumple it with your hands, and then open it
up again. Spread the paper out on the glued section of wall and press
into the glue. This is the new textured finish of the wall. Continue in
this manner until the wall is completely covered with the new textured
finish. Now take one color of paint, (this will be the background
color) and paint over the entire wall with the textured finish . Let
dry completely. Application of the second paint color is important
because it will not cover the first coat of paint, but will serve only
to highlight elements of the textured finish. To complete this process
it is best to use a dry brush and to only dip the tip in the paint can
or tray, then brush off excess on the side of the paint container.
Lightly sweep the brush across the textured finish. This action will
subtly draw out the textured finish. When the entire wall is completed
allow to dry once again. If desired you can now add a third color to
the textured wall finish, drawing in the three primary colors that you
use to decorate your room.
When using brown packing
paper there is no need to paint the surface. Application of the
crumpled brown paper will create a textured wall finish that resembles
suede when it is completely dry. This is a wonderful effect for natural
toned rooms.
