Health and Environmental Issues Related to Paint:

While painting either the exterior or interior of a home is intended to beautify the living environment, precautions should be taken to ensure that your health and the surrounding area are protected from paint and paint supplies. Paint and painting supplies could have an adverse affect on the health of human beings and the natural environment; yet, a few simple steps will allow the painting project to be completed successfully.

One issue that should be considered relating to health and the environment when painting is proper ventilation. Many paints have strong additives that are needed to create the type of paint, or even the color compounds in the paint. These chemicals in the paint can have severe affects on the health of the individual when proper ventilation is not used. Part of the preparation for the paint job should, therefore, include ensuring that there are windows open, or exterior doors that will allow the fumes from these chemicals to escape the area. Furthermore, the use of a protective face mask will prevent the inhalation of fumes, and ensure that the paint job does not affect the individual’s health.

It is also important to note that the use of paint thinners or other chemicals in the process of painting may be harsh on skin, and protective gloves should be worn in order to ensure that these chemicals do not “burn” the skin. When you are using additives to paint that will create loose particles in the air, (as found in some ceiling treatments) it is also advisable to use protective eye wear to ensure that eye health is maintained.

One issue relating to painting that often affects the environment is the disposal of paint or paint supplies after use. Improper disposal can affect the environment severely, and may even affect domestic animals if they begin to explore discarded containers and supplies. Therefore, care should be taken to gather all leftover paint and paint supplies and store those that can be used again, while discarding those that no longer have use in appropriate environmentally safe disposal containers.

By following these procedures you will be capable of protecting both your health and the environment, as well as completing a paint job that you will be proud of for years to come.
