Venetian Plaster:
Venetian Plaster is perhaps the most popular technique
in wall finishes today. This is because Venetian Plaster allows the
homeowner to cover almost any type of imperfection in the walls, while
at the same time creating a look that is naturally rich with texture
and color.
The materials for Venetian Plaster can be
purchased at most home center stores if you desire to attempt the
technique yourself. The Venetian Plaster process takes place in three
parts. This begins with a small trowel being used to apply a thin layer
of plaster to the entire surface. Before the Venetian Plaster dries, it
should be smoothed with a larger trowel and then allowed to completely
dry. The second step is comprised of a second application of Venetian
Plaster. However, in this step the homeowner should apply the Venetian
Plaster in an "X" pattern continuously over the surface. Once this
layer of Venetian Plaster dries, the final application of Venetian
Plaster with the large trowel serves to smooth the entire surface and
complete the coverage of any imperfections in the wall.
Depending
on the final texture that you desire on the surface, Venetian Plaster
can then be smoothed with an electric hand sander. This process
provides a slight sheen on the wall and finishes the project.
Professionals
recommend that prior to beginning the Venetian Plaster project you tape
off sections of the wall that you do not want to be plastered, and that
you use a drop cloth to protect any flooring or furniture.
