Common Interior Painting Problems: Common interior painting are often the result of a former paint job
that was not planned and executed properly. For example, home owners
may begin to notice that there are bubbles or cracks forming in the
paint, or interior painting problems may be evident in the form of
flaking paint.
These interior painting problems are often caused by such factors as,
- An incompatibility of the new paint with the paint that was already on the painting surface.
- Oil based paints being applied over plaster.
- Enamel surfaces that were not cleaned prior to the application of paint.
- Dampness on the surface, or leaks within the wall.
- Paint being applied over wallpaper.
Resolving
these interior painting problems will require the home owner to first
check for leaks in or around the wall, perhaps around windows and doors
as well. If leaks are not responsible for the creation of the interior
painting problems, the homeowner will then need to use a scraper to
remove the damaged paint. It is advisable to use just enough pressure
when scraping to remove the affected painting area. The application of
too much pressure may cause added wall damage.
Once the damaged
paint has been removed, the location where the interior painting
problem exists should be sanded using a fine grade sandpaper. Be sure
to smooth the edges of the area so that the new coat of paint will
evenly work into the other painted areas of the wall.
In the resolution of the interior painting problem it will then be
necessary to use a drywall compound to even out the wall surface. Once
the compound completely dries, apply a new coat of paint where the
interior painting problem occurred. It is important to paint over the
drywall compound as soon as possible after it dries in order to prevent
any cracking in the new wall surface.
