Jewel
Stone is a faux finish that resembles many stone formations and can be
used over concrete, cement or wood. Jewel stone consists of a
cement-like base that is comprised of aggregates and silica and is
applied over an area to create a stone hard finish that is applicable
indoors or out.
Jewel Stone can mimic slate,
flagstone, hand laid stone, field stone, tile or wood plank. Jewel
Stone ranges in thickness from 1/16 to ½ inch, and one bag mixed with a
cement binder covers approximately 45 square feet.
Jewel
stone should be applied in two coats, however, each coat must be
allowed to completely dry before proceeding. The first coat of the
jewel stone mix is applied with a trowel and smoothed. The first coat
of jewel stone will need to set for 10 hours before continuing with the
second coat of jewel stone.
When the first coat of
jewel stone is dry, use the trowel to apply the second coat. When
smoothing the surface after the second application of jewel stone use
the trowel to create texture on the surface.
The
second coat of jewel stone will only need to set for two to four hours.
When this time has elapsed you will now need to use the trowel to
outline the "stones" on the surface. Be sure to allow space between the
indented "stones" for the mortar look. This space should not be more
than ½ inch, or it will need to be refilled. During this process the
surface will also need to be "shaved" to remove excess and to allow for
the final smoothing of the jewel stone surface. This process should be
completed before the jewel stone mixture is allowed to dry.
The first coat of sealer for jewel stone should ten be
applied prior to the surface drying. Following the application of the
sealer the stones will need to be colored with a sponge.
The final coat of jewel stone sealer is applied after the surface has had 24 hours to completely dry.
